The Dragons are knocking on the door to first place in the GLIAC. If they have their way, by the end of the weekend they will have knocked the door down.
Tiffin (ranked third in the Midwest Region) took on Ashland (ranked ninth in the region) in the first of four games in the final regular season weekend before the GLIAC tournament. The Dragons (31-12, 22-6 GLIAC, .785) used solid pitching to post 5-3 and 5-0 wins over the Eagles (27-13, 19-5, .791), bringing them to within mere percentage points of first place. Coupled with Grand Valley State's two losses at Saginaw Valley State, TU is now in sole possession of second place overall.
Mindy Meredith got the win in game one, tossing 7 innings of 4-hit ball, allowing no earned runs and fanning 7.
TU scored runs in five of the first six innings, while Ashland failed to score until the seventh inning when TU errors led to 3 unearned runs.
Meredith helped her own cause with two hits and 2 RBIs, while Caitlin Houk and Stephanie Bobotas also had two hits. Meagan Baird drilled a solo home run, while Tiffany Smith had an RBI-double.
Not to be outdone, Amber Young tossed a gem in game two, allowing just 3 hits in the 5-0 shutout while fanning 8 batters over 7 innings.
TU tallied 3 runs in the second inning and tacked on two more runs in the 7th for insurance. Lauren Mazzuca had 2 hits, while Smith drove in 2 more runs.
TU now takes on Ashland in two more games April 30 starting at noon.
