The Dragons are trying to make a statement in the GLIAC this season. With a narrow doubleheader sweep of 27th-ranked Saginaw Valley State, TU took one big step towards doing that.
Tiffin posted a 1-0 win in game one and followed it up with a 3-2 victory in the nightcap over the Cardinals. The Cardinals, picked to win the GLIAC North and ranked as high as 25th in the nation two weeks ago, got strong pitching themselves in the doubleheader but the Dragons found ways to win in both games.
In the opener, Amber Young outpitched Jade Fulton, allowing just 2 hits to Fulton's 3 hits. While Fulton fanned 12 hitters in 6 innings of work, it was Melodi Murrieta's solo bomb in the bottom of the sixth inning that proved the difference.
Young, who improved to 3-1 with the complete game victory, also fanned 8 batters.
In game two, Mindy Meredith (4-1) got the win, going 6 innings and allowing 2 earned runs on 4 hits while fanning 5.
The Dragons were able to jump out to a 3-1 lead, with Katie Toomey getting a key double scoring two runs in the fourth inning to break a 1-1 tie. Meagan Baird also added 2 hits on the day.
After the Cardinals narrowed the score to 3-2 on Marcy Medina's run-scoring double, Meredith was forced to hang on with runners on second and third and two outs. Meredith fanned Monica Gathright to strand both runners and end her day.
Abbey Cooksey came on in the seventh inning and picked up her third save. The Cardinals managed to get the tying run into scoring position with two outs, but Cooksey handled a comebacker herself and flipped to first base to complete the sweep.
TU now takes on Northwood at 12 pm March 27, trying to complete a 6-0 GLIAC-opening homestand weekend.
