Tiffin University overcame poor field goal shooting by forcing 23 turnovers, staying just close enough to grab the lead with 22 seconds remaining and escape Wayne State with a 50-48 victory. The win improves TU to 11-5, 6-4 in the GLIAC.
The Dragons, who trailed by as much as 10 points in each half, could not get on track from the floor all night, shooting just 21 percent in the first half and finishing at 30 percent for the game.
But, as has been the case all season for TU, aggressive defense proved the difference, as TU forced 23 turnovers and had 13 steals leading to 17 points off turnovers. The defensive intensity even allowed the Dragons to hold off a 55 percent second-half shooting effort by the Warriors, with TU getting 15 more field goal attempts in the game than the host team.
Tiffin sank 10 of 15 free throws, including two clutch free throws by Mandy Jaeb with 22 seconds left that gave TU a 50-48 lead. Wayne State had time for a final shot but missed a shot with 3 seconds left as TU got the win.
Jaeb led the Dragons with 17 points and was the only Dragons player in double figures. Jillian Adams came off the bench for 8 points while Jessica Harris had 7 points and 5 rebounds. Amanda Baute led the team with 12 rebounds, while Holly Focke also had 6 points and 7 rebounds.
