TIFFIN, Ohio - Tiffin (3-2, 2-1 GLIAC) tallied the first 16 shots of the game, including three that found the back of the net, and the Dragons never looked back in a 8-0 win over Lake Erie (1-2, 0-3 GLIAC) Sunday afternoon at the Paradiso Athletic Fields.
Tiffin outshot the storm 40-8 for the game, including 23-2 in the first half alone. Individually, Jenna Hornyak led the Dragons with seven shots and two goals. Shelly Rogers added two goals of her own in the first half on five shots. Lesley Dotson added two assists for her first points of the 2010 campaign.
In goal for the Dragons, Denise de Resende grabbed both shots faced.
Lake Erie was paced by Paige Nemec and Taylor Yurick with two shots apiece. Storm goalie Megan Baldacci grabbed 15 saves on 23 shots on goal.
Tiffin had a chance to take a lead in the second minute of the game when Lake Erie was whistled for a foul in the box, but the Storm held as goalie Megan Baldacci knocked the shot away to keep the game scoreless. Just nine minutes later, TU's Ashley Davis had a one-on-one situation right in front of the LEC goalie. She cut left and put the ball in for the first goal of the game and her first score of the season.
In the 12th minute, Tiffin struck again when Hannah Stevens found Stephanie Bowman for her first goal of the year to put the Dragons up 2-0. Just 15 minutes later, Rogers notched her second goal of the year when she put a perfect bend straight off a corner kick.
For the exclamation point on the half, Rogers added her second goal of the game at the 41:04 mark off a saved shot by Erin Thomas to put Tiffin up 4-0 heading into intermission.
Tiffin continued the offensive outburst in the second half. At the 60:50 mark, Satu Hermunen found Hornyak right in front of the goal 12 yards out. Hornyak snuck the ball in the bottom right corner for her second goal of the year and the Tiffin 5-0 lead. Joining the first goal of the season parade was Lauren Merriman in the 73rd minute. Katie Collier threaded the needle on a through pass that found Merriman 18 yards out for the shot and the TU 6-0 lead.
Putting the finishing touch on the match was Hornyak and Katie Scheff, both on assists by Dotson, for the final 8-0 margin. Hornyak scored from 18 yards out on a through pass while Scheff headed the ball right in front of the net with 1:15 remaining in the game.
The Dragons return to action Friday when they travel to Saginaw, Mich. to take on Saginaw Valley State. Kick off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
