Tiffin University picked up its first win ever against Findlay in GLIAC play, putting together a solid second half to propel them to a 71-51 victory. TU improves to 6-3, 2-2 in the GLIAC while the Oilers fall to 6-2, 2-1.
Neither team started the game in strong fashion, as TU shot just 36 percent in the first half and the Oilers shot 30 percent. But a 21-13 rebounding advantage and a 9-3 scoring edge at the free throw line allowed TU to post a 29-20 halftime lead.
Tiffin, which put together a 17-7 run over the final 7:00 to take the 9-point halftime lead, fixed some of their shooting woes after the break, firing a 52 percent second half shooting percentage while continuing to hold the Oilers to 31 percent overall from the floor.
The Oilers never got on track shooting, putting up 60 total shots to Tiffin's 50 but making three less shots than the Dragons (22-19). Tiffin pulled away over the final 10 minutes of the second half, continuing their big edge at the charity stripe in going 21 for 27 while the Oilers went 9 for 14.
The Dragons were outscored in the paint 28-22 but dominated the rebounding margin 43-32. They also benefited from a 16-5 edge in second chance points and an 18-10 advantage from their bench.
Karli Mast carried the Dragons from the floor, totaling 20 points, while Mandy Jaeb made up for a poor shooting night with a perfect 8-for-8 from the line for 15 points and 5 assists, while Jennifer Johnston also reached double figures with 10 points.
Holly Focke had 9 rebounds, Stephanie Kelly had 7 points, and Amanda Baute had a good game off the bench with 7 points and a team-high 11 rebounds.
Tiffin now takes on Wayne State at 3 pm on Saturday, Dec. 18 as they try to get back on the winning side of the ledger in the GLIAC.
