WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. - The Dragons quickly found out why the Hilltoppers are ninth-ranked in NCAA Division II.
The home team raced to a 43-point lead in the first half and never looked back as Tiffin (2-2) fell to West Liberty State (5-0) 125-77 Saturday afternoon in West Liberty, W. Va.
Karl Finley led the team with 16 points while Brandon Harris had a career high 15 points, Rafael Cuellar contributed 12 points and team highs in both rebounds (six) and assists (4). Joe Graessle chipped in 11.
John Wolosinczuk led six double-digit scorers for West Liberty with 20 points. Chris Morrow came off the bench for 14 while Corey Pelle and Jordan Fee added 13. Alex Falk contributed 11 and a game-high eight boards.
West Liberty wasted no time showing what it wanted to do early, taking a quick 5-0 lead on a pair of Felle free throws and a three by Wolosinczuk, all in the first 38 seconds. The Hilltoppers used a couple of mini runs to run out to a 74-31 lead at half. Joe Graessle led the Dragons from the field in the first stanza, going 3-for-5 from the field for nine points.
The home team built a 50-point advantage just three minutes into the second, but Tiffin put on an 15-2 run of its own over the next three minutes. Travis Spahr got the spurt started with a jumper with Finley adding a pair from the charity stripe and a jumper. Brandon Harris capped the eight unanswered with a jumper at the 15:27 mark. Keen Cockburn added a jumper for the Hilltoppers, but a jumper by Finley, a pair of free throws by Mike Brown and a three by Keenan Barlow capped the run with West Liberty State leading 85-48 with 13:43 left.
Tiffin returns to action Thursday (Dec. 2) when it opens Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play at Ferris State. Game time is at 6 p.m.
