For the second straight day and for third time in the series, the Tiffin University baseball team (14-27, 9-15 G-MAC) could not close out the game with a lead and on Sunday lost in 11 innings 7-6 after being two outs away from avoiding a four-game sweep against Ashland.
With one out in the ninth, a solo home run against Dominic Elia tied the game and forced extras. In the 11th, an infield single by Gavin Marceric brought home Luke Westerman to give the Dragons a 6-5 lead.
Brock Polilli came in to try to close the game out, but his struggles continued. Polilli gave up back-to-back hits on back-to-back pitches as the Eagles walked off the Dragons for the second game in a row.
Prior to the 11th, the Dragons led the majority of the game. After trailing 2-0 after one, the Dragons plated five in the second to take a 5-2 lead. Cameron Jantz doubled home Julian Hernandez and Jantz then scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at two. Later in the inning, TU took advantage of a dropped fly ball and plated three more runs. Westerman scored on a sacrifice fly by Gavin Marceric and Adam Deitschel hit a two-run home run for the final two runs of the inning.
In the seventh, the Dragons had runners on second and third with no outs following an error but could not push anymore runs across which proved to be a big outcome in the game as Ashland plated one in the seventh to make it a 5-4 game while TU came up empty on attempting to add on to their two-run lead at the time.
Polilli took the loss and dropped to 0-4 after giving up two runs (one earned) in the 11th. Polilli did not record an out. Brett Madison pitched 1.2 scoreless innings and struck out three. Elia pitched 7.1 innings of relief and allowed three runs on nine hits with one walk and seven strikeouts. Keegan Phillips started and pitched 1.0 innings, allowing two runs on two hits with one walk.
Westerman led the offense going 2 for 4 and scored two runs.
