Tiffin University (1-2) battled back from a second-half deficit but fell on a last-second goal as Chowan won 12-11.
The game was close through all four quarters though the Dragons only held the lead three times over 60 minutes. After falling behind 2-0, the Dragons got goals from
Connor Gucwa,
Jack Howard, and
Cole Mack, highlighting a run that tied the score 3-3. Another goal by
Isaac Wert gave TU a 4-3 lead at the 9:45 mark of the second quarter.
After trailing 8-5 early in the third quarter, the Dragons went on a 5-1 run with goals from
Noah Cruz, Wert,
Aiden Criteser,
Kyle Geller, and
Aaron Cotter to take a 10-9 lead with 9:48 to play.
Another goal by
Phoenix Biggs put TU up 11-10 with 6:09 to play. Chowan equalized at the 3:25 mark and got the gamewinner with one second left on the clock.
Statistically the Dragons held many advantages. They outshot Chowan 51-40, forced 23 turnovers, and won the ground ball battle 35-23. Chowan, however, had a better shots-on-goal percentage, as only 24 of Tiffin's 51 shots were on target. Chowan connected on 24 of 40.
Wert and Mack both had 2 goals for TU while Biggs, Cruz, Howard, Gucwa, Geller, Cotter, and Criteser also scored. Cruz added 2 assists along with Gucwa, Wert, and Criteser.
Brady Sortor had 7 ground balls while
Dominic Giacona and
Michael Hernandez had 4 apiece, while Giacona also had 4 caused turnovers and Hernandez 3.
Tyler Nutting took the loss in goal, making 12 saves.
