Game Recap: Baseball |

Dragons earn another split with Walsh

Tiffin University baseball (7-12, 2-2 G-MAC) split with Walsh again on Sunday, which resulted in both teams winning two of the four games this weekend at Heminger Field.

Just like yesterday, the Dragons won game one and Walsh took game two. Tiffin defeated the Cavaliers 14-8 in game one, and the Cavaliers responded with a 13-7 win in game two.

Game 1:

TU starter Dominic Elia was one strike away from getting out of a jam in the first inning, but Walsh came through with four runs to start the game. The deficit was no issue for the Dragons, and they answered with four of their own in their first plate appearance of the day.

Dylan Ruhe scored on a sacrifice fly by Griff Cady to get on the board and Cameron Jantz followed with a huge two-out, three-run home run to tie the game. It was the first career home run for Jantz.

Tiffin put together 14 unanswered runs to blow the game open. Cady gave the Dragons the lead with a solo shot in the third as part of a four-run inning. TU put another crooked number on the board in the fourth, plating six. Highlighting the fourth inning were solo home runs by Ruhe and Adam Deitschel.

The pitching held on to stave off a comeback attempt by the Cavs, and Patrick Dinnen closed it out in the ninth.

Luke Mager got the win throwing 3.0 scoreless innings of relief and allowed one hit with two strikeouts.

Jantz, Will Miller, and Brayden Clark recorded two hits, and Jantz and Miller had four RBI. Every started reached base safely at least once.

Game 2:

Walsh struck first again and this time scored three, and the Dragons were unable to climb out of the deficit this time around.

Three in the first and one in the second once again gave the Cavs a four-run lead, and the Dragons slowly chipped away scoring one in three straight innings to cut the deficit to 4-3. Cady scored on a sacrifice fly by Gavin Marceric, Michael Patellis hit a solo home run, and Julian Hernandez scored on an error.

The game unraveled for the Dragons in the sixth as Mason Brunecz came in with the bases loaded and surrendered a grand slam which gave Walsh a 10-3 lead.

Trailing 13-7 down to their last three outs, Cady led off with a single but the Dragons were unable to put together a rally.

Trent Hedges started and was tagged with the loss throwing 2.0 innings allowing four runs on five hits with one walk and six strikeouts. Austin Guerra was the only pitcher to record a scoreless outing.

Cady recorded a team high three hits. But once again, every starter reached base safely at least once.
