Game Recap: Baseball |

Dragons split with Walsh to open G-MAC play

Tiffin University baseball (6-11, 1-1 G-MAC) opened G-MAC play on Saturday at Heminger Field taking on Walsh. The Dragons opened with a win and the Cavaliers won game two.

Game 1 (W, 5-3):

The Dragons never trailed in this one, and TU struck early as Michael Patellis scored on an RBI single by Gavin Marceric to make it 1-0 in the second inning. Walsh tied it in the third until a three-run fifth inning put Tiffin on top 4-1.

In the fifth, Luke Westerman singled home Jaden Leach and Adam Deitschel and Patellis drew bases loaded walks.

Walsh made a late push and scored two unearned runs in the seventh after an error and two wild pitches by the Dragons. In the eighth, Brayden Clark gave TU a massive insurance run with a solo home run.

Brock Polilli closed it out in the ninth to earn his second save of the season.

Johnathon Ray earned his first win of the season throwing 5.0 innings and allowed one run on four hits with five walks and seven strikeouts. Brett Madison pitched 3.0 innings of relief and struck out four.

Clark was the only Dragons to record a multi-hit game while Patellis and Deitschel drew two walks.

Game 2 (L, 3-1):

This game featured a pitching duel between the two starters, Walsh's Ryan Chamber and Tiffin's Brandon Swope

The Cavaliers used the home run ball to win the game. A solo shot in the fourth gave Walsh a 1-0 lead, and another solo shot in the seventh proved to be the game winner.

The Dragons tied the game at one in the sixth taking advantage of a Walsh error. Dylan Ruhe reached on an error to start the inning and scored on an RBI single by Deitschel. Griff Cady walked to put runners on first and second with one out, but the Dragons could not take the lead as Clark and Marceric went down swinging to end the inning.

The Cavaliers added two in the seventh, the home run and then added an unearned capitalizing on a passed ball. The Dragons brought the tying run to the plate in their final at bat of the game. Julian Hernandez led off with a double but was left stranded as Westerman, Will Miller, and Ruhe could not extend a potential rally.

Swope started and went 5.2 innings and allowed one run on three hits with three walks and seven strikeouts. Keegan Phillips threw 1.0 innings and took the loss, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits with two strikeouts.

Deitschel recorded a multi-hit game.
