Dragons walk off Cardinals in home opener 11-10

Down to their last out and last strike, Dylan Ruhe delivered a bases-clearing double to give the Dragons (5-10) an 11-10 victory over Saginaw Valley State on Tuesday afternoon in their home opener at Heminger Field.

The ninth inning was made possible thanks to an error by the SVSU shortstop, and with two outs, pinch hitter Griff Cady kept the game alive with a double and Will Miller was hit by a pitch to load the bases which brough up the lead off man Ruhe.

Prior to the chaotic last two innings, the Dragons held a commanding lead through the first seven innings. TU plated three in the first as Adam Deitschel hit a two-run home run and Brayden Clark added a solo shot.

Both teams scored in the third and fourth innings. After the Cardinals plated two in the third, Clark blasted a two-run home run in the same inning to give the Dragons their three-run lead back. An error by Julian Hernandez led to two unearned runs for the Cardinals in the fourth but the Dragons got one back as Luke Westerman scored on an RBI double by Ruhe.

Michael Patellis joined the home run party in the fifth with a solo shot and RBI single by Ruhe in the sixth gave Tiffin an 8-4 lead.

Saginaw Valley erupted for six runs in the eighth to take their first lead of the game 10-8. The first five batters reached and with runners on second and third with two outs and the game tied at eight, the Cardinals got a clutch two-run double by Buck Snabes on a sinking line drive that right fielder Deitschel could not corral.

The Dragons threatened to score in the eighth but Patellis struck out with runners on the corners to end the inning.

Every starter for the Dragons reached base safely and Clark and Miller had two hits each. Miller was 2 for 2 with two walks. Ruhe went 3 for 6 with 5 RBI.

Andrew Baileys (1-0) got the win in relief, throwing 2.0 innings allowing one run on two hits with one walk and one strikeout. Austin Guerra, Luke Mager, and Mason Brunecz each had scoreless outings.
