Tiffin University baseball (2-9) picked up their first two wins of the year on Saturday afternoon against Gannon, winning game one 6-3 and game two 10-7.
Today's wins snapped a nine-game losing skid to start the season and dating back to last year extended that streak to 10 straight losses.
Today's wins also marked the first career victories for head coach Troy Merriman.
Game 1:
Trailing 1-0 in the third, Michael Patellis delivered a two-out, two-run single to put the Dragons ahead. TU got four big insurance runs in the fifth as Brayden Clark doubled home Jovanny Skrelja. Clark would come around to score on an error, and Patellis delivered an RBI triple and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Gavin Marceric.
Gannon made it interesting in the seventh scoring two runs on three hits off TU reliever Andrew Baileys. After a two-out double extended the inning, Baileys got a ground out to secure the Dragons' first victory.
Dominic Elia stepped up big time on the mound and moved to 1-0 on the year. Elia went 6.0 innings and allowed one run on three hits with two walks and six strikeouts.
Skrelja, Clark, and Patellis delivered multi-hit games with Patellis driving in three runs.
Game 2:
TU rode their momentum and plated six across the first two innings. All six runs came with two outs. In the first, Clark started the rally with a walk; Adam Deitschel provided an RBI triple and then scored on a passed ball, and Marceric blasted a two-run home run.
In the second, Julian Hernandez scored on an infield single by Skrelja and Clark provided an RBI double.
Gannon got three back in the third, but the Dragons blew the game open in the fifth to lead 9-3 as Tiffin took advantage of an error. The Dragons scored three in the inning, scoring one on an error, one on a wild pitch, and then Marceric stole home.
Gannon's high-powered offense answered and plated four to make it 9-7 in the seventh. The Dragons were able to halt some of that momentum though as Marceric delivered a two-out RBI double.
The TU bullpen closed it out in the final two innings. Brett Madison provided two huge scoreless innings and struck out three and Brock Polilli earned the save after pitching a 1-2-3 ninth inning with two strikeouts.
Hayden Bush (1-0) got the win throwing 1.2 innings and allowed two runs on one hit with three walks and three strikeouts.
Marceric was 3 for 4 at the plate with 3 RBI and scored two runs. Clark went 2 for 3 and also scored two runs.
