Tiffin University men's basketball (6-18, 2-15 G-MAC) made it interesting late, cutting a 21-point deficit down to six but Ohio Dominican hung on for a 64-56 win over the Dragons Thursday night at the Gillmor Center.
A jump shot by Caleb Bates tied the game at 12-12 with 9:29 left in the first half and the Panthers retook the lead on their next possession, which catapulted a 13-0 run and gave ODU a 25-12 lead to break the game open a bit. The Panthers never trailed again.
ODU closed the half on a 4-0 run and led 34-23 at halftime.
A dunk by Jonah Nesmith cut the deficit to nine, but the Panthers were able to answer with nine in a row to extend the lead back to 18. Ohio Dominican extended their lead to 21 with 7:10 left in the game.
Tiffin once again would not go away quietly and cut the deficit to six with 1:10 remaining. Despite ODU missing two free throws in the final minute and 10 for the game, the Dragons were held scoreless for the final 70 seconds.
Ohio Dominican was +15 from beyond the arc and made six more field goals than the Dragons. The Panthers also won the rebounding battle 37-31 and recorded 12 offensive rebounds, which led to 14 second chance points.
D'monyae Davis led the Dragons in scoring with 21 and grabbed five rebounds. Nesmith and Bates had eight points each.
The Dragons went a perfect 16 for 16 at the charity stripe.
