Tiffin University men's basketball (6-17, 2-14 G-MAC) could not contain the defensive glass which resulted in 15 second chance points for Lake Erie and catapulted the Storm to an 82-71 win over the Dragons on Saturday at the Gillmor Center.
The game was a back and forth, tight affair for most of the first half which featured five ties and five lead changes. The Storm led 21-12 at the 9:11 mark of the first half until the Dragons exploded for a 12-3 run which put TU back ahead 24-22 on a fastbreak layup by D'monyae Davis at the 6:06 mark.
The Storm responded with nine straight to retake the lead and they would not relinquish the lead the rest of the way, taking a 33-26 lead into the break.
The Dragons got back within five 1:42 into the second half on a bucket by Michael Lucarotti, but the Dragons could not close the deficit anymore and trailed by double digits for most of the second half.
TU tried to make a late push and put Lake Erie at the free throw line where they made six of eight in the final minute. Lake Erie's biggest lead of the game was 18.
The Storm attempted 10 more field goals than the Dragons (60-50) and made nine more field goals (29-22).
The Dragons were outrebounded 34-30 and the Storm turned 12 offensive rebounds into the aforementioned 15 points which proved to be the difference.
Davis had another big game, finishing with 27 points, seven rebounds, two assists, and two steals while going a perfect seven for seven at the charity stripe.
Jonah Nesmith and Jacob Pleiman chipped in with 14 points and 10 points, respectively with Pleiman also corralling seven rebounds.
Marquel Newsome dished out four assists.
As a team, the Dragons made 23 of 25 free throws.
