The Tiffin University men's basketball team (5-11, 1-8 G-MAC) snapped a six-game losing streak, pulling out a 60-56 win over Hillsdale on Saturday at the Gillmor Center.
The Dragons led for over 36 minutes and held off a furious second-half comeback attempt by the Chargers while holding Hillsdale to 30 percent shooting and 16 made field goals to go along with seven blocks.
Tiffin turned an 8-6 deficit into a 14-8 lead following back-to-back layups by Jonah Nesmith and Demar Burton to cap off an 8-0 run at the 13:22 mark. Later, Tiffin increased their lead to 29-13 as Jacob Pleiman hit a three-pointer to cap off an 11-0 run. The Dragons suddenly went cold, and the Chargers closed on an 8-1 run over the final 5:36. TU led 30-21 at halftime.
Tiffin maintained their lead for the first part of the second half as a free throw by TJ Pangonas made it 43-29 with 12:22 remaining. However, the tables turned as Hillsdale slowly clawed back into it. The Chargers went on a 23-9 run that lasted over nine minutes and the game was suddenly tied at 52 with 2:43 to go.
The Dragons took the lead back on their next possession on a free throw by Nesmith and then a layup made it 55-52 with 1:33 left. Despite the Chargers' comeback, they were unable to retake the lead.
Two free throws by D'monyae Davis made it 59-56 with 19 seconds left, and CJ Yarian's three-pointer to try to tie was way off the mark as the Dragons prevailed following another free throw by Davis with one second remaining to seal it.
Demar Burton led the way offensively with 17 rebounds and also grabbed seven rebounds to go along with three blocks. Nesmith finished with six points and 10 rebounds and Davis chipped in with 11 points. Ethan Damerum had six points and eight rebounds. Damerum and Davis had three assists each.
