The Tiffin University women's soccer team (0-0-1) opened the season with a 1-1 draw on Thursday afternoon in Pennsylvania against the University of Pittsburgh Johnstown.
The Dragons came ready to play as Tiffin netted their first goal of the season just 3:40 minutes into the game. Following a UPJ throw in, Suzy Hayes stole the ball and sent a perfect through ball to Tia Nagle who was racing down the field towards the net. Nagle corralled the pass as the Mountain Cats goalkeeper came running off her spot and Nagle snuck it past the goalkeeper into the lower left corner of the net to give the Dragons a 1-0 lead.
Following the goal, UPJ sent two shots on goal that were both saved by TU goalkeeper Sam McPhee which included one terrific diving save. A few minutes later, a free kick hit the crossbar to no avail as the ball ricocheted away from the goal.
The Mountain Cats tied the game at one in the 18th minute. A ball got hit into the air into the wind, hit the turf, took another high bounce and TU goalkeeper McPhee came off her line. McPhee and the UPJ offensive player lightly made contact, and it was UPJ's Maddie Barrick who was able to get her head on the ball. The ball took another high bounce and landed into the net. Megan Schonberger was the closest defender and she was unable to track the ball down and prevent it from going into the net.
Both Taylor Iden and Dani Garner had good looks on goal in the first half, but both were saved. The two teams entered halftime tied at one.
The second half was all about the defenses with neither team scoring. The Dragons did have the advantage statistically though. Tiffin outshot UPJ 7-3 and had a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks in the second half.
The Dragons did turn up the pressure offensively in the final five minutes with heavy rain falling. Two of Tiffin's three corner kick attempts came during that time, but it only resulted in one shot on goal by Suzy Hayes and it was saved by the UPJ goalkeeper.
For the game, both teams recorded 13 shot attempts. The Dragons had eight shots on goal with the Mountain Cats recording seven on goal.
McPhee played all 90 minutes in goal and made six saves. Nagle, Autumn Schweitzer, and Hayes each recorded two shot attempts.
