The Tiffin University volleyball team (2-4) swept Wheeling 3-0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-21) Saturday morning to conclude the Grand Rapids Downtown Classic. The win was the first straight set victory this season for the Dragons.
Tiffin got off to a strong start and never trailed in the opening set. A kill by Parker Vackert and four attack errors gave the Dragons a 5-1 lead early. Wheeling rallied to make it 19-19 and back-to-back points by Olivia Karhoff (solo block and a kill) gave TU the lead back. Overall, the Dragons won six of the final eight points of the set.
TU got off to a fast start again in set two, winning six of the first nine points. Wheeling one three straight to make it 6-6 and the Dragons won the next four to regain the advantage 10-6. Later in the set, back-to-back kills by Karhoff and Maddie Daniel gave Tiffin their biggest advantage at the time of 20-12. The Dragons clinched the set with a block.
The Dragons kept their momentum going to start the third set, winning the first four and overall 9 of 14. The Cardinals cut the deficit to two multiple times and each time the Dragons won the next point. Leading 22-20, TU won three of the final four and Katelyn Owens clinched the match with a kill.
Karhoff led the way offensively with 17 kills and Owens added 10. Karhoff also recorded 15 digs with Taylor Kirker recording a team-high 19 digs. Maggie Pavlansky again led the team in assists, this time with 38.
The Dragons hit a season-best .254 in the match.
