The Tiffin University volleyball team (2-5, 0-1 G-MAC) opened conference play Friday night with a loss at 25th-ranked Findlay, falling in straight sets (18-25, 20-25, 16-25). Tonight's matchup was also the first of two meetings between the two this season and a north division battle.
Tonight's straight set loss is the fourth of the season for the Dragons in seven matches and TU is now 0-3 against ranked opponents so far.
The Oilers started out hot in the opening set, jumping out to a quick 4-0 lead forcing a Tiffin timeout. The Dragons settled in and back-to-back kills by Maddie Daniel tied made it 6-6. The Dragons took their first lead of 12-10 on three straight attack errors by the Oilers. After the two teams traded points, Tiffin trailed 18-17 before Findlay won seven of the final eight points of the set including the last four in a row.
The Dragons got off to a strong start in the second set as two kills by Olivia Karhoff and one by Kaylee Freund gave TU a 5-3 lead. Overall, Tiffin would win eight of the first 13 points. The middle of the set featured runs by both teams. A kill by Katelyn Owens made it 11-11 and Findlay would win the next five to take a 16-11 lead. Tiffin responded with four straight that included a kill by Parker Vackert and a service ace by Morgan Morley to make it 16-15. The Dragons still trailed late, 19-17, following another kill by Daniel. The Oilers won six of the final nine points to take the set.
In the third set, Findlay jumped out to a 3-0 lead and Tiffin would not lead. A kill by Jada Shade cut the deficit to 11-8 and Findlay blew it open by winning the next five and seven of eight to take an 18-9 lead. The Dragons got back-to-back kills by Daniel and Shade and the Oilers closed it out winning the final three.
Owens led the way offensively with eight kills and Karhoff recorded seven. Taylor Kirker led the way defensively with 10 digs and Maggie Pavlansky recorded a team-high 27 assists.
The Dragons finished the match with a .181 hitting percentage while the Oilers finished with a percentage of .321.
