Tiffin University (43-12) picked up two dramatic victories on day three of the G-MAC Softball Tournament, defeating Northwood 10-9 in 8 innings and Ohio Dominican 4-1.
The win puts TU in the championship game against Hillsdale at 10 am May 3. The Dragons will need to defeat the Chargers twice to take the title.
A video review and a clutch hit led to the victory in game one. With two outs,
Molly Koesters appeared to reach first on an error at second base but was called out. After video review, Koesters was called safe to give TU extra life. With pinch runner
Caylin Stevens on base,
Aubrie Harper drilled a double to center field to score Stevens in the walkoff victory.
The game featured huge scoring runs by both teams. Northwood struck first with four runs in the third inning to chase starter
Isabella O'Brien.
The Dragons responded with 9 runs in the fourth inning, all with two out. Harper and
Lydia Kobie singled, with
Ryan Wallace walking to load the bases.
Reagan Mengerink singled to drive in two runs, and
Jessica Miller followed with a long home run to left field to give TU a 5-4 lead. After
Maci Head reached on an error,
Baylee Mirgon smacked a double for another run. After
Tori McPherson singled, Koesters added another home run to the inning to cap the 9-run explosion.
Northwood would not die, however, as they responded with 5 runs in the sixth inning to knock out reliever
Lexi Key.
Ella Esterby entered as TU's third pitcher of the day and pitched the final 3 innings to get the win, allowing no hits or runs with 3 strikeouts.
Against the Panthers, Tiffin got all of its runs in the fourth inning. Head and Mirgon both walked with one out and an error on McPherson's fly ball to right field loaded the bases. Harper came up with another clutch hit, drilling a double for 2 RBI, while Koesters singled for another run. Harper then proceeded to score on a wild pitch to make it 4-0.
ODU got one run back in the sixth inning but it was all they could muster against Esterby, who started and finished the second game with 7 innings of work. She allowed just 6 hits to improve to 17-7.
