Dragons get split at Ashland

Tiffin University (37-11, 19-3 G-MAC) pulled out the nightcap at Ashland to gain a split on the road, falling 4-3 in the opener and winning 4-3 in game two.

In the victory, Lexi Key got the win, tossing 7 innings and allowing no earned runs on 5 hits with 9 strikeouts. 

The Dragons scored two runs in the first and two in the fifth. TU opened the game with a single by Reagan Mengerink followed by a home run to right center by Jessica Miller as TU jumped out to a 2-0 lead.

With the score 2-1 in the fifth, Mengerink doubled and Miller singled to put runners on first and third. Baylee Mirgon then doubled for one run. TU got another run on an error at third base to make it 4-1.

With the score 4-3, Key had to pitch out of a bases loaded jam in the sixth inning with a strikeout. She also finished strong, fanning two of the final three hitters to secure the win.

The Dragons came within two outs of winning the opener but could not hold on for the win. Leading 3-1 with one out in the seventh, the Eagles used five singles and a walk to erase the lead and win 4-3.

Ella Esterby took the loss in relief, pitching 2.1 innings and allowing 3 earned runs on 5 hits. Isabella O'Brien started and went 4 innings, allowing one earned run on 4 hits.

Tiffin got all its runs in the second and third innings. In the second, Tori McPherson doubled, advanced to third, and scored on a wild pitch.

In the third, Miller doubled and Mirgon was hit by a pitch. After moving up on a wild pitch, Aubrie Harper singled to drive them both home.
