Tiffin University women's lacrosse (8-4, 4-1 G-MAC) shook off an early two-goal deficit and dominated the second half, outscoring Malone 6-2 to pick up a big win on Thursday defeating the Pioneers 12-7.
Malone started the game with two quick goals in the first 1:37 and seemed to have all the momentum. The Dragons' defense then took control for the remainder of the quarter while the offense went to work, scoring three goals to lead 3-2 after one.
A goal by Lauren Walsh 16 seconds into the second quarter made it 4-2 Dragons. The tide then changed and went in Malone's favor as the Pioneers rattled off three straight goals to retake the lead 5-4 with 11:19 remaining in the first half.
Following a 10-minute plus scoring drought, Lillian Graham and Guinevere Salas connected on a goal to make it 5-5 with 4:02 left in the first half. The game really changed and all the momentum shifted in the Dragons' favor with one second remaining in the first half. TU forced a Malone turnover and went racing down the field to score with one second remaining in the half as Caylin Kunze scored off an assist from Kenna Wigginton.
That goal proved to be the game-changing momentum play as the Dragons went on to control and dominate the Pioneers in the second half. Another goal by Kunze capped a 5-0 TU run and made it 9-5 with 6:35 left in the third quarter.
Walsh and Katelyn Jarvis had one goal each in the final 1:46 of the third to make it 11-6 heading into the final quarter. Malone looked to get some of that momentum back as the Pioneers scored 1:56 into the fourth quarter but the Dragons held the Pioneers off the board for the rest of the game to secure a big win.
Walsh led the way offensively with a season-high five goals and also added one assist. Jarvis and Graham had one goal each. Wigginton had two goals and two assists and Kunze scored three goals while Salas had two assists.
Sarah Hart got the win in goal, recording four saves in 60 minutes. Graham led the team in ground balls with eight and led the team in caused turnovers and draw controls with four each.
Tiffin outshot Malone 25-18 in the game and won just 9 of the 23 draw controls. TU forced 29 Malone turnovers and the Pioneers narrowly won the ground ball battle 25-24.
