Dragons hold off Trojans for 13-11 win

Tiffin University women's lacrosse (3-2) had to overcome a slow start and a late push by Virginia State but managed to squeak by the Trojans 13-11 at home on Saturday afternoon to earn their third straight win. 

Virginia State won the opening draw control and 54 seconds into the game to take a 1-0 lead and dominated the possession for most of the opening period.  

The Dragons trailed 3-1 and then Kenna Wigginton and Caylin Kunze scored back-to-back goals over a 40-second span to tie the game going into the second quarter. Kunze scored another goal 1:40 into the second to give Tiffin a 4-3 lead and the Dragons would lead for the remainder of the game. 

After a goal by the Trojans tied the game at five, Lauren Walsh responded with a goal to put Tiffin back on top 6-5 and that remained the score going to halftime.  

Three goals over the span of 1:54 gave the Dragons their largest lead of the game of 11-6 with 5:16 remaining in the quarter. The goals were scored by Wigginton, Kunze, and Lillian Graham.  

Tiffin led 11-8 going into the fourth quarter and another goal by Graham made it 12-8 Dragons with 9:04 remaining in the game. 

Tiffin seemed to be in position to pull away, but the Trojans fought back scoring three goals to make it 12-11 with 6:12 remaining. With 4:05 left, Graham added a goal to make it 13-11 as the Dragons took advantage of a penalty by the Trojans for the UP goal. The Dragons' defense held Virginia State scoreless for the final 6:12 of the game. 

Sarah Hart got the start in goal and made two saves in 12:37 minutes. Sadie Wermuth played the remaining 47:23 and made five saves to earn her first win of the season.  

Wigginton and Graham both scored four goals while Kunze scored three and Walsh had two. Walsh, Kunze, and Guinevere Salas had one assist each.
