Dragons manage split at Hillsdale

Tiffin University (23-9, 7-1 G-MAC) managed a split at HIllsdale in a big conference showdown, winning 4-3 in the nightcap after falling 5-2 in the opener.

In the victory, Lexi Key pitched well, going the distance and allowing 3 earned runs on 5 hits with 4 strikeouts. After Hillsdale climbed to within 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth inning, Key found another gear and did not allow a baserunner over the final two innings.

Tiffin led 4-0 to open the game including getting 3 runs in the third inning. After Molly Koesters doubled and Kylee Kleiner walked, Reagan Mengerink blasted a three-run home run to left field.

Tiffin added a run in the fourth as Maci Head drilled a leadoff shot to left field to make it 4-0.

In the opener, it was the Dragons that fell behind early, as the Chargers got 3 runs in the second inning off starter Ella Esterby. Three Dragons errors hurt TU's pitching in game one, leading to two unearned runs.

Trailing 3-0 in the fourth inning, TU got its first run. A Head double was followed by a Baylee Mirgon single to make it first and third for TU. Tori McPherson then got a run in with a sacrifice fly.

Two more Chargers' runs in the fifth inning put TU down 5-1. Jessica Miller smacked a solo home run in the sixth to make it 5-2 but Tiffin could get no closer.

In the seventh, Tiffin got two on with no outs to start the inning. Three straight fly outs ended the game.
