Tiffin University (1-4, 0-2 G-MAC) staged a late fourth-period comeback but came up just short 9-8 against visiting Malone.
The first half was close throughout with Malone holding a 4-3 edge at the break. Tiffin opened scoring on a goal by
Connor Gucwa off a pass from
Cole Back. After Malone went ahead 2-1,
Jack Behre scored an unassisted goal to tie it 2-2.
Leyton Roetting then scored off a dish from Gucwa as Tiffin went ahead 3-2, but Malone scored twice before halftime to take the lead at intermission.
Malone put separation between itself and the Dragons with a 4-1 scoring margin in the third period. Tiffin's lone goal came from
Alex Brown off a pass from
Carson Beatty late in the period.
That goal started a streak of four straight TU goals as the Dragons staged a comeback.
Aiden Criteser scored to open the fourth period and was followed by goals from Roetting and Criteser to make the score 8-7 Malone with 6:52 left.Â
Another goal by the Pioneers was answered 11 seconds later as
Nick Overocker scored to make the score 9-8 with 4:20 to play.
Tiffin had two more shots over the remaining minutes, with
Sam Trujillo putting a shot on goal that Malone saved.Â
Turnovers hurt the Dragons, as they had 24 miscues. Malone outshot TU 45-37 while Tiffin won the ground ball battle 40-34. Tiffin also won the faceoffs 12-8.
Dawson Baker took the loss in goal for TU, making 18 saves over 60 minutes.
Roetting and Criteser had 2 goals apiece while Gucwa had a goal and 2 assists. Overocker had 9 ground balls and 11 faceoffs won while
Oliver Miller had 3 ground balls and 3 caused turnovers.
Dawson Baker added 5 ground balls while
Jack Howard and
Dominic Giacona had 4 ground balls each.
