Tiffin University (14-8) got strong pitching on both ends of its doubleheader with Saginaw Valley State University, winning 2-0 and 6-1.
In the opener,
Ella Esterby improved to 6-3 by tossing a 4-hitter while fanning 4 over 7 innings. She allowed just four singles in the complete game shutout.
Tiffin got all of its offense on two swings, as
Baylee Mirgon drilled a home run off the top of the center field fence in the second inning and
Maci Head drilled another one to center field in the fifth. Those two hits were the only ones the Dragons got in the opener.
The Cardinals tried to mount a rally in the seventh. After a leadoff single, the Cardinals advanced the runner to third base with two outs to bring the tying run to the plate. Esterby got an unassisted groundout to first base to end the game.
In the nightcap, the Cardinals got a run in the top of the first inning and could manage nothing else against
Isabella O'Brien (4-0). O'Brien allowed just 3 hits and fanned 12 with just one walk in a dominating performance.
Tiffin, meanwhile, put together 11 hits. In the first,
Jessica Miller was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a groundout. Head then singled her home to tie the game 1-1.
Tiffin got another run in the second.
Baylee Mirgon singled and moved to second on
Tara Gall's single. After moving up a base on a groundout, MIrgon came home when the first baseman threw high to home trying for a double play.
Tiffin broke the game open in the fifth.
Lydia Kobie doubled and
Reagan Mengerink then drove her home with a single. Pinch runner
Tori Abel then moved to third on Miller's single. After Miller stole second with two outs,
Aubrie Harper singled to drive in both runs and make the score 5-1.
Tiffin got its final run in the sixth.
Tori McPherson singled and moved to second on an error in centerfield. After stealing third, she came home on a wild throw by the catcher.
