It was a tale of two games for Tiffin University baseball (1-1) on Friday afternoon as they defeated Saginaw Valley in game one 17-8 and was shutout in game two 2-0. The offensive game was highlighted by a Griff Cady grand slam.
In game one, the Dragons scored in the first four innings that included two six-run innings to take control as the bats came out firing and ready to play. The Cardinals hit a three-run home run in the first for a 3-1 lead and it was short lived as Tiffin scored six in the second inning and scored 16 straight runs.
Adam Deitschel, Brayden Clark, and Brett Nicodemus all recored an RBI single in the inning as the Dragons took advantage of a defensive error by the Cardinals.
Griff Cady's grand slam highlighted the six-run fourth inning. The slam was the first homerun of his Tiffin career.
Deitschel, Aidan Grabowski, and Luke Westerman had three hits each in the game. Zach Johnson got the win on the mound, pitching 2.0 innings of scoreless relief while striking out one.
Two SVSU pitchers held Tiffin to just two hits in game two. The game was scheduled for nine innings, but only eight were played.
The Cardinals got RBI singles in both the third and fifth innings to make it 2-0.
Andrew Fairbrother started the fourth inning with a leadoff single and that would be the final hit of the game for TU. SVSU pitching retired 15 straight Tiffin batters to end the game.
Westerman had the other hit for the Dragons in the game and Scotty Adelman took the tough loss in this one. He pitched 4.2 innings, struck out two, and allowed two runs.
Tiffin's two games against Grand Valley State tomorrow have been cancelled.
