Tiffin University men's basketball (6-17, 4-11 G-MAC) used a big 17-0 run that lasted over seven minutes in the first half to erase an 11-point deficit and turn it into a 29-25 halftime lead and following a hot-shooting second half, Tiffin downed the Hillsdale Chargers 72-58 Thursday night at the Gillmor Center. Tonight's win avenged a 24-point loss to the Chargers in their first matchup of the season back on January 9.
The Dragons started the game strong as their first two possessions resulted in three-pointers by Caleb Bates and Dekyre Fuller. Following a layup by John Muhammad, the Chargers went on an 11-0 run to take a 17-8 with 11:56 remaining which forced a Tiffin timeout.
A turnover by Michael Lucarotti turned into a fastbreak layup by the Chargers that saw the visitors lead 23-12 at the under-8 media timeout. Out of the timeout, that's when things started to turn into the Dragons' favor. Tiffin regained momentum with a huge 17-0 run that saw four different players score that was highlighted by a thunderous DJ Gooden fastbreak dunk. The Dragons led 29-25 at the break as the Chargers finally snapped their near eight-minute scoring drought with a jump shot in the final seconds of the opening period.
The Dragons shot a blistering 68 percent in the second half and did not allow the Chargers any hope of a comeback. While the Dragons were making shots, it was the exact opposite for the Chargers as they couldn't buy a basket. Tiffin had outscored Hillsdale 22-6 eight minutes into the second half to lead 51-31 and led by as many as 26 in the game.
Hillsdale finally got a few three-pointers to fall in the final three minutes, but it was too little too late.
