Tiffin University (6-4, 5-3 G-MAC) fell in another overtime heartbreaker, losing to Northwood 40-37 on the road.
The game saw the Dragons fall behind by 17 points late in the first half before mounting a big comeback and taking the lead late in the fourth quarter.Â
In the overtime, the Dragons got the ball first and moved to the Northwood 14-yard line before settling for a 31-yard
Ben Rudolph field goal as Tiffin went ahead 37-34.
On Northwood's OT possession, the Timberwolves picked up two first downs and won the game on a 6-yard run up the middle.
Both teams scored on their opening possessions of the game, with Tiffin responding to a Northwood TD with a quick strike 81-yard touchdown pass from
Alex Johnson to
Emari White at the 9:30 mark of the first quarter.
Northwood responded with 17 unanswered points, taking a 24-7 lead that also included a 32-yard interception return for a score. Tiffin finished the half strong, though, picking up two touchdowns in the final 5:00.
The first score came on a 75-yard TD catch by
Joey Zalewski with 4:58 left, and he came right back on TU's next possession for a 22-yard touchdown grab. That made the score 24-20, Northwood at halftime.
The Dragons took the lead immediately in the third quarter when Will Jackson-Linkhart made an 8-yard TD catch at the 8:43 mark to put TU ahead 27-24.
After a Northwood score early in the fourth quarter put them back on top 31-27,
Ethan Holbrook made a 6-yard TD catch (Johnson's 5th TD toss of the game) that put the Dragons ahead 34-31 with 3:28 to play.
Northwood sent the game to overtime with a 20-yard field goal with 5 seconds left in the game.
The game was close statistically except for two critical numbers. Tiffin had 2 turnovers leading to 14 NU points while Northwood had no turnovers.
Overall Tiffin had 25 first downs to NU's 20, and outgained the Timberwolves 457-418. The Dragons also had the ball for nearly 9:00 more than NU (34:12 to 25:48). Tiffin also went 11 for 15 on third downs while holding NU to 9 of 16.
Alex Johnson finished 25 of 33 for 342 yards and 5 TDs with one interception. Zalewski finished with 107 yards receiving on 4 catches while
Emari White had 98 yards on 3 catches.
Ronald Blackman rushed for 54 yards while
Daniel Weems had 49 yards.Â
