Tiffin University (7-4, 6-3 G-MAC) stunned 8th-ranked Findlay (10-1, 8-1), handing the Oilers their first loss of the season on the game's last play to win 23-21.
Tiffin won the game in remarkable fashion, driving 94 yards in the game's final 49 seconds before
Jaedyn McKinstry hauled in a 13-yard touchdown pass from
Alex Johnson to win the game.
Johnson managed an amazing final drive, going 6 for 9 passing and connecting on four big pass plays to
Josiah Raber covering 62 yards while also getting a 19-yard completion to
Ronald Blackman to set up the winning TD.
The game was close and back-and-forth all day. Findlay opened with a 38-yard field goal with 3:22 left in the first quarter.Â
Tiffin responded with an 85-yard drive that concluded when
Daniel Weems caught a 5-yard TD pass from Johnson at the 1:14 mark to take a 7-3 lead.
After Findlay recorded a safety midway through the second quarter, the Oilers took the halftime lead with a 25-yard field goal with 1:09 left in the half.
Tiffin's
Ben Rudolph answered with a 35-yard field goal of his own at the 4:48 mark of the third quarter but an 8-yard run by the Oilers late in the third quarter put them ahead 14-10.
The Dragons responded with an 80-yard drive that ended with McKinstry hauling in a 12-yard pass from Johnson at the 13:38 mark of the fourth quarter as TU pulled back ahead 17-14.
Findlay appeared to mount a potential game-winning drive late in the fourth, driving 70 yards and scoring on a 5-yard run with just 53 seconds left in the game. Tiffin countered with the game-winning drive.
The two teams were nearly even statistically. Tiffin outgained Findlay 370-360 while Findlay held a 22-20 first down lead. Findlay also held a massive 19 minute advantage in time of possession but it wasn't enough for the win.Â
Johnson had another sensational game, completing 19 of 31 passes for 251 yards and 3 touchdowns with one interception. Blackman rushed for 77 yards and added 40 more receiving yards.
Ethan Holbrook led the team with 75 yards receiving while Raber had 62 yards, all on TU's final drive.Â
Defensively
Jacob Tueimeh had one of the busiest days in Tiffin's NCAA history, registering 19 tackles.
Niko Bohler also had 12 stops while
Isaiah Funches-Foster had 8 tackles.
Khris Walton also had 7 tackles with a sack while
Uzonna Nzekwe also had a sack.
