The Tiffin University women's soccer team (3-8-2, 2-6-1 G-MAC) finished their six-game homestand on Saturday with a historical Senior Day victory against 23rd-ranked Cedarville on Saturday afternoon at the Paradiso Athletic Complex.
Today's victory was significant. It was the first time that the Dragons have defeated an NCAA Division II nationally ranked opponent. Today was also the first time they had beaten a nationally ranked opponent since 2006, and was their first win against Cedarville since October 8, 2013, snapping a 10-game losing streak to the Yellow Jackets.
Momentum shifted in the Dragons' favor 12 minutes in. At the 12:21 mark, a Cedarville shot attempt hit off the crossbar which kept it 0-0 and the Dragons scored the only goal of the game 68 seconds later in the 14th minute. Mauriana Dorsch fed a beautiful ball inside the box to Leia Rienerth who waited for the ball to take one bounce before rifling a shot into the upper left corner of the net off the right foot.
The Yellow Jackets nearly tied it 63 seconds later, but the Dragons got a clutch team save to keep Cedarville off the board. Cedarville continued to put offensive pressure on the Tiffin defense and the Dragons were up to the task, keeping the Yellow Jackets off the board to earn their second straight shutout win.
TU goalkeeper Aubree Lee made two incredible tough diving saves to seal the deal late. Tiffin tried to add a second goal in the 73rd minute, but Mikaela Bevelander's shot was saved by the CU goalkeeper. That was the only shot on goal the Dragons had in the second half.
The Yellow Jackets finished with the advantage in shot attempts (26-8) and corner kicks (14-1) but couldn't break through against the stingy Dragons defense.
Lee got the win playing all 90 minutes while making 10 saves.
