The Tiffin University volleyball team (6-3, 1-0 G-MAC) opened conference play Tuesday evening with a 3-1 victory (24-26, 25-21, 25-17, 25-17) at Lake Erie College. Tonight's road win was the first true road win for the Dragons this season.
TU had to come from behind for the win after dropping the first set and the first set was tightly contested throughout that featured 12 ties. The Dragons got off to a quick 3-0 start on a kill by Olivia Karhoff and two attack errors from the Storm. LEC tied it for the first time at six with TU answering by winning the next three points but were unable to gain much more separation as Lake Erie fought back to tie it once again. A kill by Josie Reinhart put the Dragons on top 24-23 and in position to take the set, but the hosts recorded three straight kills to take set one.
The Dragons got off to a great start in set two, winning 10 of the first 13 points. The set started with a service ace by Addison Conti and a kill by Kaylee Freund. A kill by Diana Heitkamp gave TU a 16-8 lead, their largest of the lead. The Storm slowly cut into the deficit that saw the Dragons clinging to a 22-21 lead. A service ace by Katelyn Owens put the Dragons up 23-21 and two attack errors from Lake Erie allowed TU to tie the match at one set apiece.
TU led from start to finish in set three that started with a kill from Conti. While the Dragons were unable to separate early, they still held the advantage and a service error from Kenedi Goon saw the Dragons lead cut to one at 15-14. TU then rallied for seven straight points to gain some breathing room. The Dragons got back-to-back kills by Taylor Peterson and Conti to take the set.
Set four was more of the same with Tiffin leading from start to finish. Two attack errors from Lake Erie and a kill by Goon gave TU a 16-10 lead and a kill by Karhoff clinched the match win for the Dragons.
While the Dragons did not have an advantage in the major statistical categories, they did finish with a better hitting percentage of .223 compared to LEC's .117.
Conti led the team in assists with 23 and Goon recorded a team-high 14 kills. Three Dragons recorded double digit digs with Karhoff leading the way with 16 and Morgan Morley adding 11.
The Dragons travel to Ashland for another road G-MAC contest this Friday, Sept. 20 at 6 p.m.
