Purdue Northwest stuns Dragons in final seconds

Purdue Northwest's Amaris Gonzalez scored the game-winning goal in the final minute with 21 seconds remaining as the Dragons (0-3) lost 3-2 at Dowling Park in Hammond, Ind. on Friday.

The Dragons were dealt a big blow in the 83rd minute when Caysee Burk was given a red card which forced TU to play the remaining minutes with 10 on the field. After the card was given, the Pride recorded five shot attempts and finally broke through on a free kick with 21 seconds remaining in the contest. Autumn Schweitzer recorded the lone shot attempt for the Dragons during that time.

The Pride got off to a quick start and scored their first goal in the ninth minute and then added a second goal 10 minutes later. In the first half, the Pride held a 7-3 advantage in shot attempts with four landing on goal.

The Dragons regrouped at halftime and fought back to tie the game. Callie Cacchione scored her first collegiate goal to put the Dragons on the board in the 55th minute and Mackenzie Borden assisted on the goal. TU tied it in the 77th minute when Emma Lennig scored her first goal of the season.

The Dragons were looking to keep that momentum going and it was looking positive until the red card changed the outcome of the game which gave the momentum back to Purdue Northwest.

Suzy Hayes led the team in shot attempts with two and six different Dragons recorded one shot on goal. Sam McPhee took the loss in goal, her first decision of the year and recorded four saves in 90 minutes.

The Dragons will play their home opener and G-MAC opener on Thusday, Sept. 19 at the Paradiso Athletic Complex against Malone at 1 p.m.
