The Tiffin University (2-2) women's lacrosse team traveled to South Carolina for a three-game stretch, opening up with a 14-12 victory over Southern Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon.
It was a very even matchup between the Dragons and Warriors as TU held a slight advantage in draw controls, 15-14. However, SWU outshot Tiffin 43-33 in total shots and 29-24 in shots on goal.
Lillian Graham opened the scoring after three minutes with a man-up goal to gift the Dragons a 1-0 lead. Southern Wesleyan took no time to respond, netting an equalizer just 19 seconds later. TU went on to score back-to-back goals, regaining the advantage and taking a 5-3 lead into the second quarter following a last-second goal by
Katelyn Jarvis.
The Dragons extended their lead in the second quarter after two quick-fire goals from
Cassidy Kumiega and
Brenna Bohan in an 11-second span, making it 7-4. The Warriors fought their way back into the game, scoring three in a row to end the half and tie the game at 7-7.
Tiffin came out of the break hot, scoring four-straight thanks to Graham, Kumiega, Bohan, and
Caylin Kunze. The Dragons were able to hang on to their lead for the remainder of the game despite, SWU cutting the deficit to two at the end of the third and fourth quarters.
Jenay Rennie was a shot-stopper in the cage, recording a total of 17 saves and leading the team with eight ground balls. Three Dragons recorded hat-tricks including Jarvis, Kumiega, and Bohan with Jarvis and Kumiega each adding two assists for a total of five points. Kunze and Graham both netted a pair of goals with
Lauren Walsh adding one as well.
Jarvis led the way in draw controls with seven. Graham ended with four ground balls and was one of three players with two caused turnovers. The other two of which were Jarvis and Kunze.
TU will now head to Spartanburg, South Carolina to take on Converse on Wednesday, March 6 at 6 p.m.
