Baseball Splits G-MAC Opener with Saints

The Dragons (6-10, 1-1 G-MAC) bounced back from an 11-1 loss in game one with an 8-4 victory in game two, splitting their conference-opening doubleheader with Thomas More.

Ben Hubert earned the start in game one but pitched just an inning before he was relieved by Johnathon Ray. Ray pitched the most of the combined six pitchers in game one, throwing three innings in which he allowed just one hit and struck out five.

The Saints had a loud second inning where they posted five runs, four of which came on a grand slam. Tiffin posted its only run of the game in the bottom half of the second on a solo home run by Isaiah Mirabal. Thomas More later added four more runs in the sixth inning en route to its 11-1 victory.

TU tallied five hits in total for the game, all coming off different bats in the lineup. Ty Hatfield and Hilario DeLaPaz were the only players other than Mirabal to record extra-base hits, both recording doubles.

It was another quick start for the Saints in game two as they put three on the board in the top of the first. However, the Dragons responded with a seven-run bottom of the second to take the lead.

DeLaPaz was hit by a pitch to walk home the first run of the game before Tommy Thamann delivered his second home run of the season, a grand slam to unload the bases and gift Tiffin the lead. The Dragons added two more on RBI-singles from both Griff Cady and Adam Deitschel.

Cady ended the game 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, two runs scored, and an RBI. Thamann led the team in RBI's with four thanks to his grand slam while Deitschel added two RBI's and finished 1-for-2.

The Dragons will look to clinch the series tomorrow, March 17 as they face off with the Saints in another doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
