Tiffin University (1-1) scored 6 second-half goals including 3 in the final quarter to pull out a come-from-behind 7-6 victory over Heidelberg.
While the Dragons controlled much of the tempo in the first half, neither team could find the nets as the two teams were tied 1-1 at halftime. Tiffin held a commanding 18-4 shot edge, including allowing just one shot defensively in the second quarter, but had little to show for it.
Tiffin also forced 19 first-half turnovers and only one shot on goal in the half. Their defense continued to do well in the second half, as the team finished by forcing 25 turnovers and allowing just 8 total shots on goal in the game.
With the game tied 3-3 late in the third quarter,
Matthew Nunnaro took a pass from
Brandon MacDonell to put TU on top 4-3 as the quarter ended.
After a quick goal by the Berg tied it 4-4 early in the fourth quarter,
Aydan Gilbert scored off another dish from MacDonell at the 9:45 mark to put TU back on top 5-4.
Again, Heidelberg equalized within 75 seconds. The Dragons went on top to stay at the 6:04 mark when
Sam Trujillo scored an unassisted goal to go ahead 6-5. TU added an insurance goal less than 90 seconds later when Gilbert scored again on a pass from MacDonell to put TU up 7-5 with 5:25 left.
A goal by Heidelberg with 1:53 left brought the Tiffin defense under pressure, but the Berg's only shot over the rest of the game was blocked to preserve the win.
Overall TU held a 37-25 shot edge and a 38-30 ground ball lead.Â
Gilbert led Tiffin with 2 goals, while
Isaac Wert, Trujillo,
Kyle Geller, Nunnaro, and MacDonell also scored. MacDonell also had 3 assists.Â
Mike Roman had 10 ground balls and 5 caused turnovers while Wert and
Aidan Fischer had 5 ground balls apiece.Â
Tyler Nutting got the win in goal, making 2 saves in 60 minutes.
