Tiffin's passing game shines in 51-10 rout of Saints

Tiffin University (3-2, 2-1 G-MAC) dialed up the passing game in their Homecoming game against Thomas More, streaking past the Saints 51-10.

Tiffin racked up 409 yards through the air, connecting on 29 of 37 passes with no interceptions as the Dragons amassed a 24-3 lead in the first half.

Tiffin got on the board on their second possession. TU put together an 11-play, 79-yard drive that ended with a 13-yard TD strike from Alex Johnson to Jalen Thomas to make it 7-0 at the 6:31 mark.

After a Thomas More field goal made it 7-3, The Dragons opened the second quarter with another 65-yard scoring drive, this one ending with a Johnson 14 yard pass to Ethan Holbrook to push the lead to 14-3 at the 8:12 mark.

The Dragons continued to use the passing attack to put together long drives, scoring on their next possession covering 77 yards with a Ronald Blackman 2 yard run into the end zone with 2:04 left in the half.

After a three-and-out by the TU defense, the Dragons got the ball back for one last drive, finishing it with a 29 yard Ben Rudolph field goal to make it 24-3 at halftime.

The Dragons' defense got in on the action to start the third quarter, with Darius Hylick picking off a TMU pass and returning it 25 yards for a quick score as the lead ballooned to 31-3.

The Saints answered on their next drive with a touchdown but the Dragons kept the train rolling late in the third quarter when Johnson connected with Thomas again, this time for a 39-yard TD strike that made it 37-10.

TU capped off a 90-yard drive early in the fourth quarter, capitalizing on a 46-yard pass play from Johnson to Joey Zalewski before Blackman rushed left for a two-yard score. The Dragons ate up the clock and finished the scoring with 59 seconds left in the game when Tyrek Spikes rushed in from 9 yards out to make it 51-10.

The Dragons totaled 516 yards of offense while holding the Saints to 193. TU's defense picked off two passes and held TMU to just 1-for-14 on third-down conversions. They also held the ball for 9 more minutes in the game, including a whopping 15 minute advantage in the first half.

Johnson had a strong game, connecting on 26 of 33 passes for 365 yards and 3 touchdowns. Thomas was the prime beneficiary, catching 7 passes for 122 yards and two scores. Zalewski had 79 yards receiving, Javier Wills added 59 yards, and Holbrook had 50 yards. Spikes led the team in rushing with 41 yards.

Defensively Hylick and Dennis Crawford had interceptions. Khris Walton led the team with 6 tackles and a sack while Collier Brown and Kenneth Byrd had 5 apiece.
