The Tiffin University women's soccer team (1-6-1, 1-3-1 G-MAC) fell in heartbreaking fashion Wednesday evening at Ohio Dominican, 2-1, as the Panthers scored the game-winning goal with 11 seconds remaining.
It is the second time this season that the Dragons have lost a game in the closing seconds.
The Dragons looked to be in good position as the duo of Emma Lennig and Suzy Hayes connected on a goal off a corner. Lennig took the corner and Hayes headed it into the net to give TU a 1-0 lead in the 73rd minute.
The lead didn't last long though as the Panthers scored the game-tying goal just 27 seconds later. The ball was sent into the box and Malea Nelson came out to knock the ball away but was undercut by teammate Makenna Dreyer and the ball then fell at the feet of ODU's Roisin Kennedy who put the ball into the as neither Nelson or Dreyer could recover in time to try to stop it.
With a 1-1 draw and a conference point in sight for the Dragons, the host Panthers scored the game winner on another unfortunate bounce that didn't go Tiffin's way. ODU had a 3-on-2 opportunity with just seconds remaining in the game and the initial ball got sent towards Nelson who made a diving lunge to make the save, but the ricochet landed right to Madeline Hartke who was standing right on the edge of the net and was able to put it away past Nelson to give the hosts the win in dramatic fashion.
Overall, it was a fairly even game. Both teams had four shot attempts in the first half and overall both teams ended up with five corner kicks. The Dragons ended up having a slight advantage in shot attempts (13) and shots on goal (7).
Nelson made four saves in the game.
The Dragons conclude their four-game road trip with a game in Michigan against Northwood on Saturday, October 5 at noon.
