Volleyball sweeps UIndy at Midwest Crossover

The Tiffin University volleyball team (10-9) bounced back in a big way this afternoon and got their first sweep win of the season today against Indianapolis (25-23, 25-18, 28-26). The Dragons avenged their five-set loss to the Greyhounds when the two teams met back in September during opening weekend at the UIndy Invitational.

Set one was back-and-forth to start with both teams putting together rallies. A combined block by Josie Reinhart and Kaylee Freund gave the Dragons a 5-3 lead and the Greyhounds answered by winning the next six to lead 9-5. TU won six of the next seven to regain the lead following a combined block by Olivia Karhoff and Katelyn Owens. A kill by Taylor Peterson put the Dragons on top for good to make it 13-12. TU led the rest of the set despite UIndy slowly cutting into the deficit. Leading 24-23, Karhoff clinched the set with a kill.

TU got off to a fast start in the second set by winning five of the first six and the Dragons would lead from start to finish. UIndy rallied twice to tie it, but the Dragons always had an answer. Back-to-back kills by Owens put the Dragons on top 21-17 and TU would win the final four points of the set. During the final stretch, Peterson and Freund recorded back-to-back kills and Owens sealed it with an ace.

With set three tied at eight, Kenedi Goon and Karhoff recorded back-to-back kills and Addison Conti added in an ace to give the Dragons a 12-8 lead. Two kills by Goon and one kill by Ashlyn Jones gave TU their biggest lead of the set at 18-10. A kill by Freund gave the Dragons match point but the Greyhounds answered and won five straight to extend the set. The two teams then traded the next four points to make it 26-26. TU won the next two points to clinch the match as Goon recorded another kill and Maggie Pavlansky served an ace to end it.

Freund led the way with nine kills and Karhoff, Diana Heitkamp, and Lexi Barber finished with double digit digs. Pavlansky recorded 16 assists and Conti was shortly behind with 15 assists.

Overall, TU had a hitting percentage of .220 compared to the Greyhounds' .123. The Dragons also put on a block clinic as they finished the match with 11 total blocks.

The Dragons play round two against Findlay on the road next Saturday, October 26 at 1 p.m.
