The Tiffin University volleyball team faced a daunting task on Friday night, traveling to Big Rapids, Michigan to battle the 2nd ranked Ferris State Bulldogs. Tiffin hung tough, but Ferris took care of business, sweeping the Dragons 26-24, 25-20, and 25-23.
Tiffin didn't back down from Ferris, going blow for blow in the 1st set. With the Dragons leading 24-21, and looking to close out the initial set, the Dragons committed back-to-back-to-back costly errors that allowed FSU to tie the game at 24-24. Then the Bulldogs finished the set with two kills to go up 1-0.
The 2nd set saw the Bulldogs jump out to an early 4-0 lead, but Tiffin rallied to trail 4-5. Ferris then made a swift 8-3 run to extend their lead to 13-7. The remainder of the match went back and forth, but Ferris never allowed Tiffin to come closer than four points, as they took set two 25-20.
In the third and final set, Tiffin trailed by as much as seven points early, but found a way to tie the game at 15-15. With the score tied at 20-20, the Dragons Victoria Turnbough and Emily Weithman, blocked the Bulldogs to give the Dragons a 21-20 lead, but Ferris used a 5-2 run to seal the deal, winning the set 25-23.
For the Dragons, Olivia Cobb totaled 12 kills, Amanda Curry came off the bench to add seven kills, and Victoria Turnbough chipped in with five kills and two blocks. The Dragon defense totaled seven blocks, and Taylor Lattimore contributed 23 digs. Emily Weithman was the facilitator for Tiffin, distributing 30 assists, and added 3 kills and one block.
The loss drops TU to 7-5 overall, and 4-2 in GLIAC play. Tiffin will regroup and head to Allendale, Michigan to take on the Grand Valley State Lakers tomorrow afternoon at 4:00 p.m.
