JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – In a game that was statistically dominated by Dragons, (RV) Carson-Newman hit the game-winning field goal with 43 seconds to come away with the season-opening 41-38 win on Thursday evening.
Carson-Newman won the opening toss and deferred to the second half, allowing the Dragons' offense to take the field first. Tiffin leaned heavily on
Ronald Blackman early, feeding him the ball on three consecutive plays, but the Eagles' defense limited the drive to just nine yards and forced an opening punt.
The Dragons' defense answered with a strong series of its own, forcing a quick three-and-out. On Tiffin's second possession, quarterback
Kyle Antoine again turned to Blackman, who surpassed 3,000 career rushing yards while helping move the chains for a first down.
Daniel Weems then burst through the left side for a 22-yard gain, setting up first-and-goal from the six-yard line. The drive stalled just shy of the end zone, but
Ben Rudolph connected on a 27-yard field goal to give Tiffin an early 3-0 advantage.
TU's defense continued to shine on the next possession, remaining disciplined against Carson-Newman's triple-option attack.
Jacob Tueimeh capped off another impressive defensive stand by dropping quarterback Eli Kaeper for a three-yard loss, forcing the Eagles to punt once again. The Dragons kept the drive alive with a successful fourth-and-short conversion and quickly moved back into the red zone to open the second quarter. Antoine connected with
Joey Zalewski for a 25-yard gain after the tight end broke an Eagles tackle, giving TU another scoring opportunity deep in Carson-Newman territory.
Blackman capitalized moments later, weaving past a pair of defenders on his way to the end zone for his 24th career rushing touchdown. The score extended Tiffin's lead to 10-0, but Carson-Newman responded with a sudden change of possession when the Eagles intercepted an Antonine pass, giving the home team a short field deep in Dragons territory. Carson-Newman capitalized on the turnover, finding the end zone on a 13-yard touchdown pass to trim Tiffin's lead to 10-7 with 10:28 remaining in the first half. Blackman provided an immediate response for the Dragons, bursting untouched through the line and racing 54 yards for a touchdown. The explosive run pushed Tiffin's lead back to 10 at 17-7.

Zack Blair, the Dragons faced a short fourth down situation in Carson-Newman territory.
Johntu Reed burst through the middle, shed an arm tackle and sprinted 33 yards to the end zone for the score. The touchdown extended Tiffin's lead to 24-7 and capped an impressive first-half rushing performance that saw the Dragons pile up 155 yards on the ground.
Carson-Newman answered with a big return on the ensuing kickoff and quickly converted the favorable field position into points. Eli Graf punched in a one-yard touchdown run to cut Tiffin's lead to 24-14.
The Eagles then forced a quick three-and-out and took advantage of the remaining 44 seconds before halftime. Carson-Newman marched down the field and found the end zone once more, trimming the Dragons' advantage to 24-21 heading into the break.
Lennox Williams forced a fumble by Eli Graff on the third play of the second half, giving the Dragons another short field to work with. Tiffin once again capitalized on the turnover, as Kyle Antonine scrambled 12 yards on a pivotal third-and-nine play before punching in a touchdown to push the Dragons' lead back to double digits at 31-21.
Carson-Newman responded with a methodical seven-play, 47-yard drive that consumed 3:16 off the clock. The Eagles capped the possession with a touchdown, trimming Tiffin's advantage to 31-28. The momentum quickly swung back in the Dragons' favor on the ensuing drive. Tiffin marched 74 yards in just five plays, with
Cane Mack finishing off the possession with a touchdown run to extend the lead to 38-28. CNU added a field goal on its next possession, and the rollercoaster matchup continued. After forcing a defensive stop, the Eagles put together another scoring drive, culminating in an eight-yard touchdown run by Jaden Jones on third down. The score tied the game at 38-38 with 7:26 remaining.
Jordan Edwards came up with a clutch 21-yard reception along the sideline, but the Dragons were unable to capitalize as the drive stalled. With just 44 seconds left, Bennett Smith drilled a 42-yard field goal to give Carson-Newman its first lead of the contest. The 'Gons had one final opportunity, but a last-second Hail Mary attempt fell incomplete as time expired.
Despite the loss, Tiffin controlled much of the game statistically, outgaining Carson-Newman 442-228 and piling up 292 rushing yards.
Ronald Blackman led the ground attack with 144 yards on 23 carries.
The Dragons will look to respond with a road matchup at Northern Michigan University at 6 p.m. on Saturday September 5.
