Tiffin University baseball (14-23, 9-11 G-MAC) dropped the final two games of the weekend series with Northwood on Sunday, falling 9-2 in game one and 19-9 in game two.
With Sunday's results, both teams swept a doubleheader to earn a split in the four-game series.
Game 1:
The Dragons were in prime position to open the day with a win and take at least three of four in the series, but everything unraveled in the seventh inning.
The Dragons led 2-0 going into the seventh as Trent Hedges threw 6.0 shutout innings, but TU turned to their closer Brock Polilli and the Timberwolves exploded offensively for nine runs in the final inning. After striking out the leadoff batter, two walks and a single loaded the bases forcing Polilli from the game.
Mason Brunecz relieved Polilli and two pitches later Northwood had taken the lead, and Brunecz was unable to limit the damage. A two-out, three-run home run blew it open to make it 9-2.
Polilli took the loss and dropped to 0-2 after allowing three runs while only recording one out. Brunecz gave up six runs on five hits and also only recorded one out. Hedges struck out nine over 6.0 innings and allowed three hits and walked one.
Tiffin only managed two hits in the game, but each one resulted in a run. In the first, Brayden Clark scored on a two-out RBI single by Dylane Ruhe and in the fifth, Luke Westerman scored on an RBI double by Griff Cady.
Game 2:
Northwood carried their momentum into game two and scored three in the first and 11 total in the first four innings to lead 11-1 after four.
Trailing 13-2 in the sixth, TU plated six to make it interesting taking advantage of two Northwood errors. Clark and Jaden Leach recorded RBI singles while Gavin Marceric brought home one on an RBI double. Peyton Ganda and Cadence Varner each drove one in with sacrifice flies and the final run of the inning was scored by Jovanny Skrelja on a throwing error by the Timberwolves' pitcher.
Any hopes of a large comeback were stymied when Tiffin committed two errors in the seventh leading to four Northwood runs, making the score 17-8.
Dominic Elia started and took the loss, dropping to 3-3. Elia threw 3.0 innings, allowed eight runs (six earned), gave up seven hits and struck out two. Patrick Dinnen struck out two in 1.1 scoreless innings of work. Eight pitchers combined to give up 19 runs, but only 13 were earned.
Clark led the offense going 3 for 4 with 3 RBI. Cady went 2 for 5.
