Dragons manage split with Eagles

Tiffin University (13-9, 3-1 G-MAC) managed a split with Ashland in a battle of first-place teams, winning 5-4 in 8 innings before falling 11-5 in game two.

In the opener, Tiffin led 4-0 after scoring twice in the second and third innings.

In the second, Reagan Mengerink reached on a single and came home on Lexi Key's two-run bomb to left field.

In the third, it was more of the same as Ella Esterby singled and came home when Tara Gall launched another home run to center field.

Ashland scratched across 3 runs in the sixth and then hit a two-out home run in the seventh inning to send the game to extra innings.

In the eighth, Tara Gall and Molly Koesters singled. With one out and runners on second and third, pinch hitter Marina Koenig doubled to drive in the winning run.

Esterby got the win with 8 innings of work, allowing just one earned run on 9 hits with 3 strikeouts.

In game two, errors killed the Dragons. Trailing 3-0 entering the fourth inning, three errors snowballed into 8 unearned runs in the inning as Ashland built an 11-0 lead heading to the bottom of the fifth inning.

The Dragons extended the game with 5 runs in the bottom of the fifth. Mengerink and Gall singled to reach base. With two outs, Gwen McMenemy singled to put TU on the board. With the bases loaded, Tori McPherson blasted a grand slam to keep TU alive in the game.

Lexi Key took the loss, allowing 3 earned runs over 3.1 innings of work.
