LAST TIME OUT: Despite the loss to Northwood, Tiffin's offense threw for a season-high three touchdown passes while holding the Timberwolves to just 62 rushing yards.
Kyle Antoine threw for 237 yards and three touchdowns, while
Lennox Williams led the defense with 13 tackles. The game was decided by a late Northwood touchdown as the Dragons came up just one point short.
LENNOX LEADING THE DEFENSE: Linebacker
Lennox Williams continues to anchor the Dragon defense. Williams leads the team with 52 total tackles and has registered at least six tackles in every game this season. He posted a season-high 13 tackles against Northwood and has recorded double-digit stops twice this year.
ONE OF DIVISION II'S BEST DEFENSES: Tiffin's defense continues to rank among the nation's elite through six games. The Dragons are allowing just 18.0 points and 231.2 yards per game while giving up only 119.5 rushing yards and 111.7 passing yards per contest. Opponents are averaging just 3.9 yards per play against the Dragons. TU ranks tied for fourth in total defense (231.2 yards per game), is first in passing yards allowed (111.7) and team passing efficiency defense is ranked eighth within Division II.
The Tiffin defense has forced 14 turnovers this season, recording eight interceptions and six fumble recoveries while holding opponents to a 30.8 percent conversion rate on third down. Their turnover margin is tied for seventh in the country.
DRAGONS WILL LOOK TO CLEAN UP MISCUES: While Tiffin has been one of the G-MAC's top teams statistically, the Dragons will look to cut down on penalties heading into Saturday's matchup at Walsh. Through six games, TU has been flagged 63 times for 548 yards, the seventh-highest penalty-yard total among NCAA Division II programs. Limiting self-inflicted mistakes will be a key focus as the Dragons seek to rebound from last week's one-point loss to No. 12 Northwood.
SPREADING THE WEALTH: Quarterback
Kyle Antoine has completed 86-of-138 passes (62.3%) for 1,163 yards and nine touchdowns this season while posting a 148.8 passing efficiency rating. He has thrown for over 200 yards in three contests and tied a season high with three touchdown passes against Northwood. Antoine's top passing performance came at Northern Michigan when he completed 21 passes for 267 yards and two touchdowns.
The Dragons have showcased a balanced passing attack this season, with six different players totaling at least 98 receiving yards.
Joey Zalewski leads the group with 18 receptions for 246 yards and three touchdowns, while
Jaedyn McKinstry has added eight catches for 175 yards and two scores.
Trey West has emerged as a big-play threat, averaging 17.3 yards per reception while totaling nine catches for 156 yards and two touchdowns. The depth of Tiffin's receiving corps has made the offense difficult to defend, as six different players have found the end zone through the air this season.
SCOUTING THE CAVALIERS: Walsh opened the season with four consecutive victories, but have dropped their last two contests against Thomas More (24-21) and Hillsdale (42-27). The Cavaliers average 325.8 yards and 24.3 points per game, utilizing a balanced offensive attack that produces 138.7 rushing yards and 187.2 passing yards per contest. Walsh has totaled 19 touchdowns on the season, including nine on the ground and 10 through the air.
Running back Jake Gill is the focal point of the Walsh offense. He has rushed for 392 yards and six touchdowns on 98 carries while averaging 65.3 yards per game. Hayden Wickard has thrown for 936 yards and nine touchdowns while completing 56.6 percent of his passes. He is also Walsh's second-leading rusher with 216 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Wickard is coming off his best performance of the season, throwing for 278 yards and four touchdowns against Hillsdale.
The Cavaliers feature several capable receiving threats led by Brady Gooding, who is a product of Tiffin Columbian High School. He has recorded 15 catches for 272 yards and three touchdowns while averaging 18.1 yards per reception.
Linebacker Eddie Nichols anchors the Walsh defense, leading the team with 56 tackles through six games. Nichols has tallied 4.5 tackles for loss and recorded double-digit tackles three times this season. One area Walsh has excelled is limiting penalties. The Cavaliers have been flagged just 34 times for 303 yards through six games, compared to 53 penalties for 473 yards by their opponents.
UP NEXT: The 'Gons will kick off from Larry Staudt Field at 12 p.m. on Saturday. They then will play their final road game of the season at Hillsdale next weekend (Oct. 24) before closing the regular season at home against Lake Erie (Oct. 31) and against No. 16 Findlay on Saturday, November 14.
