Tiffin University (2-2, 1-1 G-MAC) came up with 10 fourth-quarter points to put some distance between it and Lake Erie, picking up its first G-MAC win of the year 27-14.
Tiffin had built a 14-0 lead by halftime but then watched the Storm cut into the lead, pulling to within 17-14 by the end of the third quarter.
The Dragons opened strong, driving 78 yards on 7 plays before
Ethan Holbrook hauled in an 8-yard pass from
Alex Johnson at the 11:04 mark to lead 7-0.
Two turnovers killed subsequent TU drives while Tiffin also missed a 40-yard field goal attempt midway through the second quarter.Â
With the half winding down, TU put together a 65-yard drive behind the running of
Ronald Blackman. Blackman gained 42 yards on the drive before Will Jackson-Linkhart caught a 16-yard pass from Johnson to give TU a 14-0 lead at the break.
After the Storm cut the lead in half on their opening drive of the second half, the Dragons responded immediately with a 53-yard drive that ended with a 39-yard
Ben Rudolph field goal at the 4:43 mark.
Lake Erie exploded on an 83-yard pass play that quickly brought the Storm to a 17-14 deficit. Tiffin again responded with a Rudolph field goal covering 23 yards at the 13:37 mark of the fourth quarter.
Tiffin's defense then stepped up, stopping Lake Erie's next drive with an
Ethan Evers interception and then holding the Storm to a total of 35 yards of offense on its final three possessions.
Tiffin got a big final score at the 2:36 mark when
Tyrese Banks-Dorn rushed 29 yards for a score to put the game away.
Overall Tiffin outgained the Storm 439-277 including 255-94 on the ground. They doubled up Lake Erie on possession time (39:18 to 20:42) and had 19 first downs to the Storm's 9.
Blackman had his biggest game of the year, rushing for 179 yards and 219 all-purpose yards. He was joined by Banks-Dorn who had 74 yards rushing and 135 all-purpose yards. Banks-Dorn led TU in receiving with 61 yards while Blackman also had 40 receiving yards.
Joseph Weiers also continued his strong season, averaging 48.8 yards per punt with 4 inside the 20.Â
Defensively Aidan Fischer led the team with 8 tackles, while Evers had 7 tackles with a 25-yard interception return.
Malik Baker had 6 stops with a tackle for loss while
Uzonna Nzekwe also had a sack.
