Game Recap: Baseball |

Ashland’s arms shut down TU offense

Tiffin University baseball (13-22, 5-13 G-MAC) dropped the first two games against Ashland on Saturday falling 8-1 in game one and 3-0 in game two. In total for the two games, the Dragons generated just one run and six total hits.

The story of game one was Ashland's starting pitcher Cam Scott who took a no hitter into the 8th inning.

Ashland took a 1-0 in the first inning on a two-out RBI single and right fielder Logan Swonger gunned down the second runner at the plate to end the inning. Tiffin stranded two base runners in their first plate appearance.

The Eagles added two runs in both the third and fifth innings. AU added one in the sixth and two more in the eighth for their eight runs.

Brayden Clark's leadoff in the single ended the no-hit bid and Luke Westerman and Jack Clancy both followed with singles which led to Tiffin's only run of the game. Cal Brazier and Adam Deitschel reached base to start the ninth but the Dragons were unable to put any more runs on the board.

Brandon Swope (L, 0-3) started and took the loss pitching 2.0 innings and allowed one run on three hits with one strikeout. Steven Sexton pitched 4.1 innings of relief and allowed two runs (one earned).

Brazier, Clark, Westerman, and Clancy had one hit each and Andrew Fairbrother drew two walks.

In game two, Ashland struck first on a sacrifice fly in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead. A critical error by TU started Johnathon Ray led to Ashland's second run of the game in the fourth.

The Dragons started to barrel up the baseball in the fifth. Dylan Ruhe led off with a deep fly out to right that was caught on the warning track and Ty Hatfield recorded a single with one out in the fifth which gave Tiffin their first lead of the game. Swonger walked with two outs to put two on but Aidan Grabowski flew out to end the inning.

Ashland added their third run in the sixth on a solo home run. The Dragons brought the tying run to the plate in the sixth but came up empty. Pinch hitters Griff Cady and Hilario DeLaPaz reached base and another pinch hitter Nate Adelman struck out to end the inning. TU was retired in order in the seventh.

Ray (L, 2-3) started and took the loss throwing 6.0 innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Ryan Yingst pitched 1.0 scoreless innings and struck out one.

Swonger drew three walks.
