TU drops mid-week nonconference contest

Tiffin University baseball (12-13) suffered a 9-2 defeat to NCAA Division III Baldwin Wallace University on Wednesday afternoon at Heminger Field.

The Yellow Jackets came out swinging as the first two batters reached and both runners came around to score to give BW a 2-0 lead in the first.

The BW starter retired the first six TU batters and the visitor's bats went back to work in the third scoring five runs on five hits off of Tiffin pitcher Austin Guerra.

Cadence Varner led off the third with a single to give the Dragons their first base runner of the game.

Trailing 7-0 in the sixth, the Dragons tried to mount a rally with two outs but couldn't push any runs across. Griff Cady reached on an error and Andrew Fairbrother followed with a single but Ty Hatfield grounded out to end the inning.

Tiffin finally broke through for one run in the seventh following a BW defensive miscue. Jack Clancy reached on an error and he came around to score on an RBI double by Luke Westerman. In the eighth with two outs, Cady singled then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Cady then stole third and scored on a throwing error by the BW catcher.

Any little momentum the Dragons had going into the ninth inning was quickly ended as the Yellow Jackets tacked on two more runs in the ninth. Johnny Baileys led off the ninth with a walk but was stranded on the bases as the next three TU batters were retired.

Brayden Clark (L, 0-1) took the loss in his TU pitching debut. He pitched 1.0 innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits with one strikeout. Austin Guerra pitched 1.2 innings and allowed five runs on six hits. Ryan Yingst pitched 1.1 scoreless innings.

Jacob Soha pitched 1.0 scoreless innings. Caden Otterbacher, Nick Hayes, and Dylan Kaiser all made their pitching debuts. Otterbacher and Hayes recorded a scoreless inning of work and Kaiser recorded three strikeouts allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits.

Bret Petrigac recorded two strikeouts in his scoreless inning of relief. Cady, Fairbrother, Westerman, Varner, and Dylan Ruhe had one hit each.
