Five Tiffin University women's wrestlers are heading to the NCWWC National Championships March 7-8 at Coralville, Iowa.
Grace Jones (110 pounds),
Juliana Alejandro (103),
Sienna Sanborn (124),
Ciara Riner (131), and
Erin Martin (180) all earned selection by finishing Top 4 at the Region 4 Championships hosted in the Heminger Center.
Overall Tiffin finished 3rd of 12 teams. Gannon won the event with 144.5 points followed by Frostburg State with 118.5 while Tiffin had 108.5.
Jones was the lone champion in the group, taking the 110-pound title with three strong wins. She opened with a pin in 36 seconds over Baldwin Wallace. She won her semifinal match with a 10-0 tech fall over Hiram and then won the title 7-0 over Gannon.
Alejandro finished 2nd overall. She pinned Otterbein in 18 seconds and won her semifinal bout with a 10-0 tech fall over West Liberty. She fell in the championship to former national champion Olivia Shore of Otterbein via pin in 1:35.Â
Martin also placed second. She opened with an 11-0 win over Baldwin Wallace and then pinned Bethany in 1:54. She reached the title bout with a last-second 4-2 win over Frostburg State before falling to Gannon 11-0 in the championship.
Sanborn took 3rd place. She had a pin in 1:20 over Otterbein, a pin in 4:02 over John Carroll, and a narrow 7-6 defeat against Frostburg State. In the third-place match, she clipped Gannon 8-6.
Riner also took 3rd place with three strong victories. She pinned John Carroll in 23 seconds but then was pinned by Frostburg State in 2:19. Riner then bounced back to post an 11-0 win over Mount Union before taking third with a pin in 2:08 over Baldwin Wallace.
Abigail MIller (145) just missed a Nationals spot, placing 5th. She pinned Gannon in 2:21 before getting pinned in 3:48 against Frostburg State. She then pinned Trine in 4:47 but then fell in consecutive bouts by fall in a pair of matches to West Liberty.
Sidney Ramos (160) was Tiffin's final placer, taking sixth. She opened with a 10-0 win over Manchester and a pin in 4:48 over Baldwin Wallace but then fell in three consecutive bouts.
