Tiffin University men's basketball (7-18, 5-12 G-MAC) picked up a huge road win on Thursday night, defeating Malone 65-57 at Osborne Hall in Canton.
The Dragons led from start to finish for the win and took advantage of a cold shooting first half by the Pioneers. Caleb Bates started the game with a jump shot and two possessions later, Malone tied the game at two which was the only tie of the game as the Pioneers would not hold a lead. Bates hammered home a dunk on Tiffin's next possession and the Dragons controlled the rest of the game.
Bates, Michael Lucarotti, and D'monyae Davis fueled a 7-0 run to give the Dragons a 20-11 lead with 5:59 remaining in the first half. Tiffin continued their momentum and closed the half strong, outscoring Malone 9-1 over the final 3:07 to take a 31-17 lead into the break. Dekyre Fuller swished a jump shot on the Dragons' final possession of the first half.
Malone attempted a comeback in the second half, but they only got as close as four points. The Dragons led 37-33 with 11:04 remaining in the game and Fuller hit another jumper on the next possession. Malone cut the deficit to four on four separate occassions late in the second half and the Dragons answered with a bucket every time. Gooden hit a big three with 59 seconds left in the game to give the Dragons a 60-52 lead. The Dragons were 6 of 7 at the free throw line in the final minute to seal the deal.
Bates led the way, scoring a season-high 22 points and grabbed three rebounds. Fuller finished with 13 points and four rebounds and Gooden finished with 11 points and three rebounds. Pruitt had eight points and pulled down seven rebounds.
