Tiffin University (2-0) picked up two wins in their season opener at the Railsplitter Invitational, beating Emory & Henry 13-5 and Lincoln Memorial 5-1.
Tiffin benefited from 13 runs on 14 hits in the opener, winning in five innings. The offensive output also helped starter
Ella Esterby, who got the win with 4.1 innings of work. She allowed 6 hits and 5 earned runs with 4 strikeouts.
Offensively
Jessica Miller had 4 hits with a double with 2 RBI.
Reagan Mengerink had 2 hits for 4 RBI, while
Maci Head,
Aubrie Harper, and
Baylee Mirgon also had 2 hits, with Head drilling a home run.
Tiffin got two runs in the first inning when Miller singled and Head homered. They added four runs in the second to push their lead to 6-0. Mirgon singled and
Lydia Kobie reached on an error. A single by Mengerink drove in two runs. After a Miller double, Head singled for another run. A sacrifice fly by
Molly Koesters drove in the final run of the frame.
TU got three more runs in the third inning. With the bases loaded, Mengerink singled to drive in two runs.
Ryan Wallace then came home on Miller's subsequent single.
Tiffin put the game away with four more runs in the bottom of the fifth. After Wallace walked and advanced to third on a wild pitch and passed ball, Miller singled for the first run. After a Head walk, Koesters singled to drive in another run. A single by Harper then loaded the bases. Tiffin then won the game after scoring two more runs on a wild pitch and a passed ball.
Against Lincoln Memorial,
Lexi Key got the win, tossing 7 innings of 4-hit ball, allowing 1 earned run and fanning 8.
Tiffin scored runs in the third and sixth innings. Mengerink again led the attack with 2 hits and 3 RBI including a home run.
Aubrie Harper and
Kylee Kleiner both had doubles.
Tiffin opened its scoring in the third. Kleiner doubled while
Tori Abel singled. With two outs, Mengerink drilled a three-run shot to get TU on the board.
In the sixth, with a runner on third, an error at second base let one run in. With pinchrunner
Caylin Stevens on second, Mirgon singled for another RBI to give TU its final run of the day.
TU will play both schools again on Feb. 2 on the final day of the Invite.
