The Tiffin University men's basketball team (3-3, 0-1 G-MAC) went ice cold from the field in the second half and Northwood closed the game on an 18-3 run to knock off the Dragons 58-46 Thursday night at the Gillmor Center in the G-MAC opener for both teams.
Northwood maintained a small lead for over seven minutes to start the game and led 16-12 at the 12:48 mark until the Dragons scored nine in a row to make it 21-16 at the 8:10 mark. Noah Smith caught fire behind the arc behind the arc to give TU a 27-20 lead with 6:46 left in the opening half.
After the Dragons scored nine in a row to take the lead, Tiffin led for the rest of the half and led 34-29 at the break, but the Timberwolves got a big three at the end of the half and that momentum carried over into the second half.
Northwood started the second half on a 9-0 run to lead 38-34 and at the 14:45 mark, two free throws by D'monyae Davis snapped a 6:33 scoring drought for the Dragons.
Both teams did not shoot the ball well in the second half and a fastbreak layup by TJ Pangonas gave Tiffin a 43-40 lead at the 5:54 mark. That layup was the last made field goal for the Dragons in the game.
Northwood heated back up and went on a 13-0 run to lead 53-43 with 1:51 left. The Timberwolves got a momentum-shifting three-pointer by Jamison Eklund at the 3:22 mark to turn a three-point lead into a six-point lead.
Tiffin could not overcome a 13 percent shooting mark in the second half (3 for 23) and after shooting 50 percent in the first half, finished the game 33.3 percent (17 for 51).
Smith was the only double-digit scorer with 11. Demar Burton and Michael Lucarotti both grabbed nine rebounds. Jonah Nesmith, Burton, and Lucarotti each had seven points.
The Dragons were outscored 29-12 in the second half, and the teams combined for 44 turnovers. Tiffin had 23 and Northwood while Northwood finished with 21.
